Asia's Longest High-speed Rail Tunnel

       The Banpo Tunnel of Shanghai-Kunming High-speed Railway Tunnel, the longest high-speed railway tunnel in Asia, is located in the border area of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Yunnan-Guizhou Province and Guizhou Province, with a total length of 14756 meters. The tunnel entrance is located in Panxian County, Guizhou Province, and the exit is located in Fuyuan County, Yunnan Province.

       On June 9, 2015, the longest high-speed railway tunnel in Asia, the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway Banpo Tunnel, was recently opened. The tunnel is 14.7 kilometers long and spans Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. After the opening of the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway in 2016, it only takes about 10 hours for passengers to travel from Kunming to Shanghai, which is nearly 30 hours shorter than the original time.

       The Panpo Tunnel, 14756 meters long, crosses the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and starts construction in December 2010. The ridge through which the tunnel passes is the most important passageway for the inland of the Central Plains to enter Yunnan since the Yuan Dynasty. It is called "the first pass into Yunnan". Therefore, the passage of the tunnel means the opening of the entrance gate to the Yunnan high-speed railway, which lays a foundation for the opening and operation of the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway in 2016.

       Wallboard tunnels have crossed fault, rock contact zone, high-pressure water-rich area and goaf of coal seam for many times. The tunnel has a maximum depth of 735 meters and a maximum daily water inflow of 320,000 square meters. It is one of the three first-class risk tunnels on the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway. Tunnels adopt the design form of "joint repair at the entrance and repair at the exit". From the sketch map, the railway line is like a "man" crossing the mountains. This design is the first time in the construction of railway tunnels in China.

       The Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway is 2264 kilometers long. It is one of the "four vertical and four horizontal" high-speed passenger transport corridors in China's Medium and Long-term Railway Network Planning. It passes through six provincial capitals and municipalities directly under the Central Government of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanchang, Changsha, Guiyang and Kunming. It is the longest East-West high-speed railway in China and passes through the most provinces. Among them, the main line in Yunnan is 184.7 kilometers long. After the opening of Shanghai-Kunming Passenger Railway, Yunnan will access the national high-speed rail network, and the period from Kunming to Shanghai will be shortened from more than 40 hours to about 10 hours.
